On The Black List: Northeast Auctions

Northeast Auctions. https://www.neacoins.com. The website appears to have a novel approach to selling coins. The website provides a page to select a coin, then provides a price for a brilliantly uncirculated exemplar of that coin. At first, I thought the website was a conduit to a network of dealers, but now I am uncertain.

Its terms of service explicitly state that the coin’s grade is an opinion and that the buyer should form their own opinion of the coin’s quality and value. No images of the coin are provided, but the website states that images could be provided upon request. I subsequently tested the company’s offer to provide images. My requests for images went unanswered.

Of the four coins I received from Northeast Auctions, two coins were later determined by PCGS to have had their surfaces smoothed. I had some concerns about the appearance of the coins and decided to have PCGS confirm them. Upon receipt, I complained that the third coin wasn’t a brilliant uncirculated coin and received a replacement. The replacement had a similar appearance to the coins sent to PCGS. Because of this experience, I have lingering doubts about the fourth coin and have removed it from my collection.

I acknowledge, however, that the company has a satisfactory return policy, that it provided me with a shipping label when I requested a replacement for that coin, and that it accepted the return even though the coin was no longer in its sealed package, as required by its return policy. Thus, my issue is with the coins I received, not the company’s sales practices.
